ALUMNI PROJECTS

At Salem University, our esteemed alumni are continuously making a lasting impact through a diverse range of innovative projects that not only enhance our campus but also extend their influence to positively impact the community.

From spearheading sustainable initiatives to actively supporting scholarships for the next generation of students, our alumni are at the forefront of enhancing the overall experience at our university. These initiatives not only reflect the unwavering dedication and ingenuity of our graduates but also underscore the profound sense of camaraderie that is a hallmark of the Salem University community.

Witnessing our alumni generously give back and play an instrumental role in shaping the future of our institution fills us with immense pride. It is through their collective efforts that we are collaboratively paving the way for a brighter tomorrow, one that promises growth and success for all members of the Salem University family.

ALUMNI HONORS HALL

Each wall is labeled and designated for special items. There is the Awards wall which features the names of Alumni who have been selected as Distinguished Alumni and those who have received the Exemplar Award. The next two sections being developed contain the names of Athletic Hall of Fame recipients and will include a Coach's Corner and Alumni being honored for athletic achievements in playing and coaching. The Campus Life wall will be display various forms of life at Salem and will be updated often to include the variety of activities Alumni took part in as students. The Campus Organizations section will feature Clubs and Musical groups. The Greek Life wall will highlight the Social and Service Fraternities and Sororities that were instrumental in the Salem social life. The American Humanic's Foundation wall will give credit to the program that produces many youth organization professionals. The Veteran's Appreciation wall seeks to honor all students and Alumni who served in the Armed Forces, many who were never able to return to classes. A biographical page is being written on each veteran identified and will be displayed in a binder until an electronic display can be created. The hall also displays a 9' tall mural of the Salem College Arch.

TREE REMOVAL

Alumni had a concern that the mostly dead tree next to the Arch might someday fall and take the Arch with it. The University had the tree greatly trimmed so it wasn’t a threat but the remaining trunk was unsightly and the tree could continue to grow roots which could affect the new wall. The Black Walnut tree at the other end was a danger when the walnuts dropped on pedestrians and cars and also posed a threat to the new wall. With Alumni funding we had both trees removed this year. We still have to cut the stumps down so the lawn will look good

Save – Rebuild – Replace the Wall

The original wall had to be completely removed and replaced with better material. We have been working this past year to remove the old blocks ourselves to save money so that the contributions from our generous Alumni can be used to hire an expert to build the new wall. This project also included the removal of two trees whose roots could be harmful to the new wall. The tree threatening the Arch was considerably trimmed previously by the University but not removed. We hired a professional tree cutter to remove the tree by the Arch and the Black Walnut tree in the right corner of the lot. The City of Salem came to our rescue and broke up some of the pieces too heavy to move and they brought in heavy equipment to remove the old steps that were too tough for the sledgehammer. They also toppled the end wall which saved us a lot of time and energy trying to do it by hand. The new wall was dedicated at Homecoming 2021. Thank you to all our contributors of funds, equipment, time and energy.
